Dr. Cathy Cherrstrom is an assistant professor in the Department of Occupational, Workforce, and Leadership Studies at Texas State University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and conducts research.  Prior to joining Texas State, Dr. Cherrstrom had a career in the financial services industry, most recently as a Business Banking Executive, leading teams and serving business clients, regionally and in major markets.  A lifelong learner, teacher, and trainer, Dr. Cherrstrom transitioned to the professoriate, earning her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.


Dr. Cherrstrom’s research primarily focuses on adult development and transition in the context of work and career across the lifespan.  Her publications include peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings and presentations as well as an invited book chapter, book reviews, and other manuscripts.  Examples of current studies include midlife career transition, STEM teaching development, future faculty teaching development, and the transition from prior career expert to new career novice and subsequent journey to new career expert.  Dr. Cherrstrom’s research has been recognized with two awards, the Emerging Research Award from Texas A&M University’s Educational Administration and Human Resource Development Department and the Graduate Student Research Award from the Adult Education Research Conference (AERC).

Dr. Cherrstrom has designed and taught courses in traditional, online, and hybrid formats.  She has earned several teaching certifications, including Quality Matters’ Applying the QM Rubric and Texas A&M’s Professional Certification in Online Teaching (from Instructional Design Services), the College Teaching Certificate, and the Virtual Instructional Certification Program (both from the College of Education and Human Development).  In addition, Dr. Cherrstrom was an Instructional Consultant intern at the Center for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M.

In addition to serving Texas State and Department of Occupational, Workforce, and Leadership Studies, Dr. Cherrstrom is committed to serving her field.  For example, she is Managing Editor and Reflections Editor for the academic journal, Adult Learning.  For the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE), she is a member of the Policies and Procedures Committee, reviewer for annual conference proposals, and past member of the Conference Planning Committee.
